Moab Support Forum > Entrada Rag Card not loading Epson 4880

The Entrada Rag Natural 190 double sided scored card paper will not load in the Epson 4880. I created a custom page size 7 x 10 and downloaded the ICC profile. I keep getting error message paper did not load correctly. I have the Epson double weight matt and Staples Double sided matt 8.5 x 11 and both load and work fine with the printer. Can you please help me solve this issue ? Thank You.

The cards refuse to load in your printer because Epson commercial 17" printers (4880, 4900, P5000) have a minimum sheet size of 8x10. I haven't heard of any way to fool the printer into accepting a smaller sheet.

I've developed a system for fooling the Epson 17" printers into accepting note card stock. Briefly, you need to turn off the "check paper size" function on the printer's front panel. Then set your paper cassette tray to letter size paper. Load the card stock face down into the printer. And this is the trick part:

Measure the space between your paper and the side guide, and the space between the end of the card stock and the end stop. Construct an "ell" out of foam core that takes up this space but does NOT extend all the way to the printer feed end of the stock. Make this spacer about as tall as a stack of 50 note cards. It will take several sheets of foam core laminated together with double stick tape. With this spacer in place, the printer is able to grab the card stock and feed it as if it were a regular sheet of paper.

I printed over 50 cards (from Photoshop) just last night using this method on my SC-P5000, and they fed properly without a single misfeed. You can't print bleed on the cards, and you need to allow some white space at the feed end as well. But for cards that are blank or nearly so on the back, this isn't a problem.

One of these days, I'll get this written up and posted with pictures on my website. Hope it works for you.

Here's the full write-up on how to fool a current Epson 17" printer into printing a sheet smaller than 8.5" x 11". This should work for the 4880 as well. The setup is for an A6 card, but you can easily modify it for a 7x10" card, or any other custom paper size.

TL;DR
Disable Paper Size Check
Load proper ICC profile
Create a custom paper size; use that in your printer setup
Leave some white space at the feed end for the printer to grab
If the card has a vertical image, use "reverse print orientation" to feed the non-image size first. If the card is horizontal, place your image on the left side of the card. You could also layout a vertical with the image and type upside down, but that's a PITA.

James,
