Excellent question. The preferred method is to use interleaving sheets or glassine, which will protect the surface of your prints. Another paper to use would be the Moenkopi Unryu as this adds a bit of flair (and protection) to the portfolio. Below are some links to the above mentioned papers:

I would like to use a Flint Portfolio for my Moab Metalic prints. How to protect when stacked in portfolio when we can not use desert varnish on those prints?
