"All my portfolios are printed on Entrada. It's necessary that each print stands alone as a piece of art, and it's because of Entrada's weight and feel that my portfolio stands out from the rest."
The Luminous Landscape printer forum has frequent discussion threads on different coating products. One product that was mentioned by some was Minwax Polycrylic, available at most big home improvement stores. I've tried it (in spray-can form) on Museo Silver Rag with acceptable results. It's certainly clear and non-yellowing. Despite the "water-based" label, you should use all the usual precautions when spraying indoors. It also comes in liquid form, but I have no experience applying this.
I recently discovered and love the Slickrock pearl paper, particularly when doing antique photography prints -- looks like a daguerreotype but printed on paper. However, after mounting my prints on wood panels and sealing them, I coat my finished work with resin for a thick glasslike finish, but am finding it a challenge to figure out the best sealer or isolation coat to use with this paper prior to the resin coat. If I just do the resin over the untreated paper print, really horrible things happen to it, mainly blotchiness and discoloration. Here's what I've tried so far as an isolation coat:
Mod Podge Paper: the acid free version of this venerable crafter's glue, mostly works but when coated with resin shows a faint haze over the dark blacks.
Minwax Fast-drying Polyurethane clear gloss (oil-based varnish): mostly works, but when coated with resin turns everything kind of golden tinted -- not necessarily a bad thing, unless you want to preserve the original's tonal and color values.
Golden Gel Medium Soft Gel Gloss: When applied straight out of the jar, did the best job of preserving the original tones and color values, but was so thick and textured it looked like crap when the resin coat went on. When thinned with water to the recommended isolation coat proportions, went on fine but suddenly dissolved the pigment from my Epson R3000 and really looked like crap.
Golden Self Leveling Clear Gel: I may have put it on too thick, because it took forever to dry, and ended up blotchy and discolored.
Anybody have any wisdom on this topic, and specific sealing agents to recommend?
