Moab Support Forum > MOAB Slickrock Metallic Pearl and Lighroom Softproofing

In Lightroom 5.2, the softproof preview I get is almost completely white when I select the "Simulate Paper and Ink" option. I have only seen this with one specific profile. It occurs when softproofing with a MOAB Slickrock Metallic Pearl profile with my Canon Pro9000II. I got the profile from MOAB (download) I have 3 other profiles from MOAB that behave properly. If I turn off "simulate", the preview is normal.

I have the latest drivers for my graphics card (NVIDA GeForce GTX 275). The recommendation for this paper is to preview and print Relative Intent. This problem occurs with either intent with the "simulate" option active.

Any thoughts?

Richard, there is definitely a bug with the profile, and it is a known issue with the software that pops up only with soft proofing and not printing. We aren't able to fix the issue, as it is between the profiling software provider and Adobe, however we have provided both parties enough information to assist them with finding a fix.

I have the identical problem with the Slickrock Pearl ICC profile for my Epson Stylus Photo R1900 in Lightroom 4 in Win 8.1. However Slickrock Silver and Colorado Gloss exhibit the same pretty much blown out display in "Softproofing". All my other Moab ICC profiles display normally and I was able to print with some of those profiles with great results.
May I assume the reply to Richard also is true for my setup and that I can print with proper results?
Thanks,
Kelly

I have the same or similar
'blown out white washed effect" issue when soft proofing in LR 5 for metallic profiles. However, soft proofing in PS CS6 works very well for same color profiles.

I am curious if a solution was ever found for this? I would really like to be able to soft proof, but with this bug I don't know how to achieve this. This is expensive paper so I really would like a way to proof my prints and not just hope what I see on the screen will get printed out.

I'm a general novice when it comes to printing, so if there is no solution, how do you ensure you are getting good results with the Moab Slickrock Pearl paper?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Same problem with Cannon Pixma Pro 100 for the Moenkopi Unryu, Slickrock Metallic turning the image 'white' during softproofing.
Slickrock Silver turns the image a heavy blue cast. For me, this calls into question all of the icc profiles. I know that it takes specialized skill and equipment to make the profiles, but something as important as the profiles should be done in-house, or, thoroughly tested before releasing to the public, or, is that asking too much?

I haven't begun testing yet. Is it that the profiles are off just for soft proofing, or, are they off for printing too?

My apologies for the difficulties you are having with soft proofing. The 'simulate paper color' is not a part of the ICC profile, but a function within the imaging application (Photoshop, Lightroom, etc). The program looks at the white point data, and attempts to display it on screen. The problem arrises with the metallic papers because they are not 'white', giving you either the mostly white (Slickrock Pearl) or the dark gray/blue (Slickrock Silver) preview.

As we update the profiles with newer readings the soft proofing generally improves, but again, this has no effect on the quality of the print.

Thx for your update. That helps. I'll do test prints and work from there as usual, and just skip the soft proofing.

FWIW, I get the same problem with the Epson Stylus Photo 1400. Is the solution at this point to turn off the "simulate ink and paper" option, and will the result then be accurate? I ask because, when I do that, I get a decent image with Relative intent, except that, if I have the gamut warnings set, it shows a lot of tones as "blown out," even if they don't appear to be with the gamut warnings off. Will this be really the case with a print, or is that just another incompatibility between LR's soft proofing and the profile? Anyway, I hope you can get the profile for this printer corrected to have less of a problem.

The solution is to turn off the 'simulate ink and paper' option, and you should see an accurate soft-proof. I would be happy to make you an updated profile for the Epson 1400 as well, please email moab at legion paper dot com for more information.
