Moab Support Forum > Ink is flaking off, sometimes...

Hi. This is the beginning of my search for possible answers. I recently settled on using Lasal Exhibition Luster paper for most of my work. The look and price are great for me right now. I print on a Canon Pro9500 MK2. I'm diggin' the results. However, every once in awhile, maybe every 6th or 9th print, it comes out with a small speck where the ink has flaked off. Size varies a little, but usually 0.5-1.0mm wide by 1.0-2.0mm long. Looks like a small scratch. At first I thought the printer was doing this (and maybe it really is), but it's never in the same place. Also, it does not seem to matter what color the flake occurs on.

Any thoughts? Is this happening with anybody else? I will talk to Canon, too.

Mike-

Are you using our recommended media type when printing? I ask, because the media type tells the printer how much ink to put down onto the paper, as well as what the thickness of the paper will be. You should definitely use our recommended media type, which can be found next to each of the ICC profile links.

Andy - Thanks for the quick response. And yes, I do use your recommended media type as stated with the ICC profile for this paper: premium photo paper semi gloss. I also use your profiles for the paper.

I do have to ask, however. The Lasal luster paper I have been using says luster, and there is a Canon setting for luster paper that showed up on a recent driver update from Canon. I made one print at that setting and saw no visible difference. Any thoughts there?

Mike, the driver updates change from time to time, and we chose the best media type that was available at the time. Much of the time there is no difference behind the scenes, as they are just adding another media type to the list with similar thickness, weight and ink densities. This likely explains why they look the same.

That is pretty much what I figured, too.

So, from your experience, I am assuming you have not seen or heard of this problem I have been having?

April 4, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermike wendel

I haven't heard of the issue, actually. Are you in a high or low humidity area?

April 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

depends on time of year. Today it's 56%. I'm in Boise, Idaho. It's the high desert.

I've been having the same problem printing on Lasal Photo Matte on my Epson R3000. Prints regularly have flaking and the flakes end up on subsequent prints.

I thought this was contained to just me but in the last day I heard from a friend that is having the exact same problem with Lasal Photo Matte with his Epson R3000.

I haven't had this problem with any other papers.

What's the solution to this?

Leroy, I am wondering if you are encountering pieces of the cut sheet that ended up on the surface of the paper after we converted the sheets from rolls. Perhaps the cuttings from the edge ended up in the bagged product and on the surface. Then when you printed these loose pieces received ink but came dislodged and then yielded a white area on the paper.

My recommendation with all matte papers is to lightly brush off the surface of the paper prior to printing. Some people use a horse hair brush and others use the side or back of the hand in a gentle manner.

I'll try that and see if that helps. Thank you.

How can you brush the paper when using a roll?

June 8, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRob Scheid

When printing from a roll, we suggest brushing the ends of the roll with a camel hair brush, or nice paintbrush to remove any dust left over from cutting before loading in the printer.

If you're doing a lot of printing on Entrada or Juniper (100% cotton paper), you may need to open up the printer and check for paper lint inside- a dampened cotton swab or foam makeup triangle is a good way to remove accumulated lint & dust.
