Moab Support Forum > Canon PIXMA Pro-100 and Entrada Rag Bright 190

Another question regarding Moab paper and the Canon PIXMA Pro-100. I would like to print on MOAB Entrada Rag Bright 190 with the Pro-100 using Photoshop (CS6 in this case). I have downloaded and installed the ICC profile (great video on how to do this by the way, thanks!) Seems like I also need to tell the printer what paper type I am using (plain paper, glossy photo paper, etc). This choice shows up in the "Media Type" pull-down menu in the "Quality & Media" section of the "Print" dialogue box that opens up when the "Print Settings..." button is clicked while setting up the print. There are selections for "Plain Paper," "Photo Paper Pro Platinum," "Art Paper: 'Museum Etching'," among others, some of which I assume refer to Canon proprietary paper types. So..... any suggestion on the setting I should use to print best on Entrada Rag Bright 190?

Thanks!!
Brent

HI Brent! Thanks for your comment about the video. Much appreciated.

All the media types are listed under the profile download link. So, for your Pro 100 you'll head to this page:

http://moabpaper.com/icc-profiles-downloads/canon/canon-pixma-pro-100/

Scroll down to the Entrada Rag Bright, where you'll see in grey the media type:

Other Fine Art Paper 1

This is what you'll set in that dialog box.

I'm sorry, but I am still having trouble with this. For some reason the paper size, 11x17, is giving me trouble. The driver does not recognize this paper size accurately (gives an error code "88", that the margins are incorrect, that I should choose a fine art paper size with something called Margin 30 - but these paper sizes do not match the actual paper size). I have not found a solve anywhere for this, yet.

Canon PIXMA Pro-100 with Entrada Rag Bright 190
Paper size: Custom, 11x17 - no margins
Paper type: Other Fine Art Paper 1

Joe, all fine art matte papers on the Canon desktop printers require larger margins to print. Our suspicion is this is due to the risk of damaging the print heads when printing near the edges. In our experience you won't be able to print borderless (no margins) on any fine art paper.

Thanks for the quick reply, you people are great! I'll try adjusting the print size a tad smaller until I find the sweet spot. Thanks!

Hello there. I have been having trouble printing on a Canon Pixma Pro 100 using 11x17 Moab Entrada 300. I have downloaded and installed the icc profile, but the printer only allows the 'Art Paper Margin 30' sizes to be selected.
Is this a new compatibility issue where only Canon branded photo paper is allowed to be printed at 11x17?

Thanks.

NAq, our recommended media type for the PRO-100 printer is Other Fine Art Paper 1. Canon does enforce larger margins when printing on fine art paper, however the 11x17 paper size is entirely supported and good to go.

Are you trying to print full bleed / borderless?

January 30, 2014 | Registered CommenterMoab Paper Support

I have set the media type to 'Other Fine Art Paper 1', and am not printing full bleed or borderless (in fact there's a 3 inch border around the image).
I am using Photoshop CC. Would that be a factor?

NAq, what is the actual issue that you are encountering? Are you not able to select 11x17 as the paper size?

January 30, 2014 | Registered CommenterMoab Paper Support

Yes. Each time 11x17 is selected, a window appears saying that the paper size needs to be changed to one of the 'Art Paper Margin 30' sizes (A4, A3, or A3+).
The print option will not let me exit with 11x17 selected.

The media type is set to 'Other Fine Art Paper 1', and the Entrada Bright Rag 300 icc profile is installed.

I have a preset for this now, I always use it - but use your judgement and, if possible, do a test print. I use the Entrada Rag Bright 190 ICC profile for the Canon Pro-100, this way:

Print dialog window in Photoshop CC:
Rendering Intent: Perceptual, Black Point Compensation checked, Match Print Colors checked and Show Paper White checked - if printing from a color calibrated monitor, this is a close estimation/rendering of the print on the paper...

Canon Pro-100 Printer settings: Paper size: Tabloid (11x17), Color Matching: ColorSync, Quality & Media: Photo Papers>Matte Photo, Manual Feed, Quality: High.

This setup for me bypasses the Print Margin 30 issue and the print quality is still quite nice. I did a comparison using the 8.5x11 Paper with margin 30 and the color was very very very close. If anything, I would just brighten the curve a little to add more contrast, sometimes... depends on your aesthetic preference.

Good luck! - Joe

NAq, thank you for the clarification. This is a limitation that we were not aware of. Please use the Matte Photo Paper media type, and we will pursue a new ICC profile for you that can take advantage of all paper sizes.

Thanks for looking into it folks.
Joe, thank you for the detailed instructions. Wonderful selection of pictures on your website, really loved looking through them!

I also came across the problem that Canon printers don't allow to print on non-Canon fine art matte papers. I think they are protecting their own paper, thus limiting the choice of the customer.

One has to use the regular settings for regular photo paper.

Which means, that if you want to print on fine art papers, Canon printers are not a good choice.

I called Canon: even their top models restrict the use of non-Canon papers - which is pure insanity after you spent so much on a printer.

My next printer will be a Hewlett-Packard or an Epson.

I have to say that the first statement above is not true. Canon printers, and the PRO-100 specifically, absolutely do work with any 3rd party fine art matte paper. All fine art matte papers on Canon Pixma Pro printers require the use of larger margins, no matter if is is a Canon branded paper, Moab Paper or anybody else's.

The problem is if you pick matte paper as the media setting, the Pixma Pro-10 and Pro-1 will use the photo black ink instead of matte black ink. Any idea what to do with those printers and custom paper sizes?

Figured it out. As long as I am printing smaller than 13x19, I can select 13x19 and center the page. As long as the image is properly sized, it will print the 12x13 sheets.

Hi there.

I am trying to print invitations on the pre cut 5x7" MOAB Entrada Rag Natural 190 on my Canon Pixma Pro-100. However, the "other fine art paper- 1" setting says the paper size is too small/ not compatible. I try the art margin 30 setting and the same thing. I CAN print on the Matte photo paper setting... but the colors are just slightly too dark/ off which is irking me. I have already downloaded and installed the ICC profile.. from what I am reading on here- canon is just not a great printer to use when using "off brand" / non Canon products/ paper? any advice and help is much appreciated! Thanks.

We just updated the PRO-100 profiles on our site, and now all the matte papers have been re-profiled using Matte Photo Paper as the media setting instead of OFAP1. I recommend downloading the new profile and testing with it, color should be more accurate.
