Moab Support Forum > Buffered or unbuffered storage envelopes?

I'm searching for envelopes for print storage and I'm wondering if it's better to use buffered or unbuffered envelopes or if it matters. Does Moab recommend one or the other? Does the type of envelope matter less if the print is stored in an archival crystal clear bag before being put into an envelope? I see that you recommend 100% cotton Rising Museum Board for mounting--which I looked up and is a buffered surface--but that was the only information I could find. Are your Chinle storage products buffered or unbuffered?

Hi Jason, our Rising Museum Boards are buffered as added protection is the case anything acidic comes in contact with the board. All of our fine art papers (including Moab) are acid-free to begin with, so you don't really need to have an extra layer of calcium carbonate added if you will be mounting with Rising. You will want to ensure the envelopes you source are acid-free. If you are unsure, it's always a good idea to use an acid-free clear bag (we recommend Clear Bags).

Thanks, Marc. So it sounds like if the mounting board is buffered, and the clear envelope is acid-free that it really doesn't matter if the outer envelope is buffered or not. Either would be ok but buffered certainly wouldn't hurt anything. Is that correct? As a curiosity, are your Chinle storage products buffered or unbuffered?

Yes, buffering is not necessary in that circumstance, and it certainly would not hurt anything. It's simply added protection. Our Chinle storage boxes are not buffered. They are manufactured with acid-free materials.
