Moab Support Forum > Epson R3000 - platen thickness help needed

On my R3000 the only way to get fine art paper types is to use the front load. One of the front load options is Paper Configuration, which includes paper thickness in mm. I assume Epson defaults to its own paper thicknesses for various paper types - what are the thicknesses I should use for various MOAB papers?

- Is there a good way to convert GSM to mm?
- Is there a list of mm recommendations for MOAB papers?

I am currently using Entrada 190 and 300 but would like to branch out and use other MOAB papers.

Thanks!

Jon

Jon, you shouldn't have to make any modifications to the platen gap for our papers when you are using our ICC profile and associated media type.

Are you having any issues?

Andy,

Not having problems - but am looking to avoid any potential ones. The paper I'm working with, Entrada Natural, comes in two weights: 190 gsm and 300 gsm. I noticed that the Epson R3000 setting of Watercolor Radiant White is recommended for both weights, meaning that the platen gap is the same for both.

I can feel the difference in the paper weights. Since the platen gap is measured in mm I was concerned for head strikes on the thicker paper. Or ink spreading too wide on the thinner paper.

So again, no problems, just want my new printer to last forever and get the best printing results.

We have tested the Watercolor Radiant White media type on both weights of paper, and after close inspection we cannot see a difference at all. We did, however, notice a difference when we used a media type that uses a more narrow media type, as we had blotches of ink on the 300gsm weight most of the time. I hope this helps.

Andy,

Thanks for blazing the way! I'll stick with factory defaults on recommended media types.

I'm in need of some guidance here. Printing Moab 300gsm rag bright we continue to keep getting print smears of black along the very ends.

Using the correct .icc profile. Only thing I can think of is to adjust the Platen Gap on the printer. So for an epson 3880l would I want to Narrow it, or Widen it.

Thanks!

Hi Jon,

You would probably want to widen the platen gap to give the rather thick 300gsm paper more room. You might also want to try adding a delay between each pass of the printing head, so the paper has more time to absorb the ink.

Good luck!

I agree with Phyllis here. Some printers include vacuums to hold papers down flat as they travel through a printer, and this helps, but the are the more expensive (17") models. Platen Gap is the best choice for other printers.
