Hi,
i am currently working in mixed media, in which digital imagery is incorporated into oil paintings. Of course the digital imagery is applied prior to the oil elements. I would like to use my MOAB Desert Varnish spray to coat the digital imagery in a painting. I am wondering if it is best to spray the surface prior to applying the oil paint or afterwards. I am not sure how the lacquer-based coating will affect the canvas surface (i.e. will it negatively impact oil paint application). On the other hand, I am concerned that the spray will affect the oil paint. Does anyone have any suggestions concerning the best way to approach this process.
Thank you for your time,
Aria

Aria, my suspicion is that it would be best to use before your oil paints, but I am not entirely confident without doing some testing. I would look into spraying both before and after the oil is applied, and see if you can tell any difference in adhesion of the oil paints and/or visual differences. Desert Varnish shouldn't alter the look of the image if the proper amount is applied (in other words, don't over apply too much varnish).
